When is Apple Season in Australia?
Apples are an autumn fruit and the peak apple season runs during the autumn months. They are available during winter and spring but supply drops in summer while the new crops ripen.
The best time to pick apples is after summer. This is when they reach full maturity on the tree. You can tell they’re ready by their proper color and sweetness.
Apple trees take 3 to 4 years to bear fruit after planting. Peak production only happens once orchards mature. Many orchards grow multiple varieties which extends their harvest season.
Pink Lady Apple Season
Pink Lady apples are in season from April to August. They are the most popular variety by crop size yet have no supply in February and March. Supply picks up sharply in April before dropping after June.
Royal Gala Apple Season
Royal Gala apples are in season from March to July. Along with pink lady apples they are the only major variety to have a complete off season, between November and January. They usually arrive in markets slightly earlier in the apple season than pink lady apples.
Granny Smith Apple Season
Granny Smith apples generally have the most consistent availability throughout the year, with medium availability most months and peak season in March and April. It is the most popular green apple variety and shares it’s peak season with the red variety Royal Gala.
Where do Apples Come From in Australia?
Apples are native to Central Asia and were introduced to Australia by European settlers in the early colonial period. Popular eating varieties include Pink Lady, Royal Gala, Granny Smith. Processing varieties are also popular with growers for making juice and other processed apple products.
Different apple varieties thrive in different regions of Australia. Overall Victoria leads production with around 50% of the annual harvest. The state’s favourable climate and established orchard infrastructure make it ideal for apple growers, although Australia’s first orchards are found in Tasmania. The other states in Australia contributes around 10% of the annual supply each.
Unlike many fruits, apples store well and can maintain quality for months when properly handled, allowing for year-round availability. Although apples keep well for export only around 1% of Australian grown apples are exported.
